Why fantasy? Why fairy stories? What was it about this particular medium that made it so rife for Christian engagement in the 19th and 20th Centuries? Why were almost all of the fathers of modern fantasy Christians? Is fantasy an inherently Christian genre? This course seeks to answer these questions, and will do so through exploring the life and thought of five major figures: John Ruskin, George MacDonald, G.K. Chesterton, J.R.R. Tolkien, and C.S. Lewis.

We begin with an introductory lecture on the historical context of Victorian Britain, including features such as the Arts and Crafts movement, industrialization, and especially Romanticism. Then, we move into a survey of each of our five authors.

Each lecture focuses on an individual fantasy writer and consists of three parts. First, there
is a biographical sketch that highlights the author’s theological background and work. Second, we engage with their own reflections or writings on the craft of fantasy and fairy tale and the way in which it embodies their theological worldview. Finally, we apply these theoretical underpinnings to their own writings and draw out ways in which their fiction exemplifies their theories.

A concluding lecture seeks to directly answer the questions with which we began, and to answer further questions such as why fantasy no longer seems to be a particularly Christian endeavor, and why nobody writes fairy tales anymore.
