The first five books of the Bible, often referred to as the Pentateuch or the Torah, contain some of the most familiar and iconic stories of the Christian faith. From the Creation Narrative to the stories about Abraham and the Exodus, these are stories that form the foundation of the faith and set the stage for themes that run through the entire Biblical canon.

But these same books also contain stories that can be difficult to parse through. The Pentateuch was written thousands of years ago to an audience that was very different than us today. As a result, understanding how we relate to the laws found in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, for instance, can be challenging. It’s also worth it!

In this course, Dr. Josh Mathews conducts a thorough overview of the Pentateuch: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. You’ll be introduced to key players and themes in the story to see how they impact the overarching story of the Pentateuch and the Bible as a whole.

Josh Mathews serves as Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dean of Faculty, and Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at Western Seminary. He earned a BA in Bible, Theology, and New Testament Greek from Multnomah University, two MA degrees from Wheaton College Graduate School, the first in Biblical Exegesis, and the second in Historical and Systematic Theology, as well as a Ph.D. in Old Testament from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. In addition to his work at Western, Dr. Mathews also serves as an elder at Gresham Bible Church in Gresham, OR.
